The Award-Winning Story Crosses Through a New Frontier and is Coming to the PC this April
Originally released for the PlayStation 5 console, Naughty Dog’s hit series has been around for quite some time already, after all it has managed to secure so many awards during the last few years, but just like the previous title in the franchise, the sequel moves from its console exclusive status to the PC a couple of years later, so even though it is not a fresh new title, it is one that you should definitely check out if you are not an avid console player and prefer to always play games on your computer.
It would allow players to continue going through the critically-acclaimed story that established the in the first part of The Last of Us series with an improved version that features the award-winning campaign, new modes, vastly improved quality in all departments and so much more.
Five years have passed after the initial dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States took place. Ellie and Joel managed to get settled down in Jackson, Wyoming while living in a somewhat thriving community of survivors, which has allowed them to experience some sort of peace and stability, although the threat the infected pose has not seized to exist. What is even worse is the fact that there are also some more desperate and violent survivors seeking to gain more and more control over the already dire situation.
Since we do not wish to spoil the title very much, we could say that everything drastically changes due to an unpredicted tragic event that seriously disrupts the already fragile peace and Ellie needs to go on a difficult journey, so that she could find closure by delivering justice to the wrongdoers responsible for the occurring conflicts and ongoing chaos she finds herself in the middle of.

Go even deeper into the beloved adventure and actually learn more on how the original game was created through the hours of developer commentary that could give you intricate details about the process as you play through the game. A set of accessibility features has also been added to The Last of Us Part II Remastered Steam release, so that you are even more immersed than ever before no matter what.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered gameplay also features a variety of unlockable character and weapon skins for players to use when playing as both Ellie and Abby. You could even express your musical talents with the included Guitar Free Play mode, that comes paired with unlockable instrument skins, or take up on the time-trial challenge in the Speedrun Mode and clock-in the best time you are capable of doing.
The Roguelike Mode NO RETURN is Here to Test your Survival Skills
No Return is going to be available as soon as you start The Last of Us Part II Remastered release, although the devs encourage newcomers to play through the campaign initially, so that they get a better understanding on the on gameplay. Both new and returning players would find that this mode is designed to challenge survival skills and even though there is a tutorial, it is much more effective if you already have at least a basic grasp of the combat system.
The No Return mode is a new feature in the grim world of The Last of Us series, spotlighting the sequel’s gameplay in an intense manner. Let’s have a look at what you could expect from this survival mode. Get to fully experience The Last of Us Part II’s combat mechanics in the entirely new mode named No Return! You would have to manage and survive for as long as you are able to in each unique run, so try to choose your path to safety through the waves of random encounters as best as you can.
Pick and play as any of the many different unlockable characters from the cast, each of them coming with their very own unique gameplay abilities and skills. Go through a variety of challenges featuring different bloodthirsty enemies and familiar locations from The Last of Us Part II campaign such as Jackson, the News Station of Channel 13 and others, all of which are leading you on a path towards intense boss battles to win.
All of the possible scenarios are going to feel fresh and would even contain unexpected gameplay twists to surprise players. In the No Return mode death is permanent, so if you do not manage with a run all the way through, you will lose all of the weapons, items, and upgrades gathered and activated during that specific run and would have start all over again in a new set of randomized events and scenarios. The runs are not pre-defined in any way, so it is entirely up to you to decide how to make progress through them, there would be different encounters to pick and by doing so to determine the type of gameplay mode you head into, but also what rewards you could get unlocked, as well as the potential modifiers you would need to handle with and more.
Between every combat scenario, there is the Hideout you could get back to, where you can prepare for and select your next battle by following a growing path that is shown on a corkboard that could be found in these familiar and safe locations.
When you get all the way to the finish of a run, you would have to go fight against one of the 6 boss encounters that are going to include some of The Last of Us Part II Remastered most memorable enemies, but not in the way you fought them in the campaign because there could be active modifiers and other stipulations. At the end of every run regardless of the way they end are going to have a score and you would get a rank based on the performance you had. Each next run you endeavor on is going to be distinctly different and unique from the previous ones before it, thus always giving players a fresh combination of encounters when they play in the mode.
The challenges in No Return are separated in 4 different kinds:
- * Assault: where you would have to handle with multiple oncoming waves of enemies.
- * Capture: in which you would have to breach a vault containing important supplies guarded by enemies.
- * Holdout: for this one you and an AI-controlled ally defend a location from the Infected.
- * Hunted: in which you would have to manage and survive until the timer runs out.
Each challenge variant could happen in a number of locations and to make sure that every run feels different from the rest there would be random Mods applied to the encounters. When taking on modded challenges this would also be reflected on the rewards you could get, but rest assured that these experiences are designed to allow you to try out your skill in fun and random ways, since there are mods which make enemies drop pipe bombs when killed or having a fog everywhere on the encounter map as well as many other exciting twists that the teams have prepared for you in the game!
Another optional dynamic set of challenges are called Gambits and they would further expand on the randomness of any given attempt at the mode. From having to score a specific number of headshots or dodge melee attacks, Gambits could be helpful when you need to plan how you would go into a challenge or offer you with an opportunity to better construct your strategy while at the same time consider the additional resources you may need for the specific run.
Since we are on the topic of resources, players of The Last of Us Part II would probably already be aware that the campaign features various weapons for Ellie and Abby’s arsenal that you can upgrade, as well as skill trees to progress through. These mechanics do transfer over to the No Return mode too, but would actually reset after each run you do, so you may need to do some difficult choices as you move forward about which weapon to spend your resources on or what skills would you deem most fitting in the coming encounters. The available weapons drops would also vary from one run to another, which is going to further determine which upgrade paths you may need to take in order to survive.
The Included Metagame in the No Return Mode
Coming paired with the survival runs in No Return are some metagame objectives and possible unlockables that also carry over from each run, this way even if you are not quite able to reach to a boss fight, you would still be making progress toward the availability of new characters, skins and more goodies to obtain.
In the beginning of the No Return mode you would only have Ellie and Abby available to pick from as playable characters, but a way the devs wished to offer players choice comes in the form of a greater cast of characters to be unlocked over time, including a few that would be playable for the first time in the franchise. By going through the different Challenges, you would be able to unlock Ellie’s fellow Jacksonites Dina, Joel, Tommy and Jesse, while on Abby’s side of things there would be companions such as Lev, Yara, Mel, and Manny to be unlocked.
Every mentioned character has their unique skills that offer for a plethora of different playstyles. Dina, for example, is equipped with trap and stun bomb recipes from the get go and has an available upgrade in her skill tree that would allow you to craft double the number of bombs, while Abby has a melee upgrade recipe and could actually heal when delivering melee hits. The team has high hopes that such a variety would encourage the player base to not only go for the playstyles they are most familiar with but also to test out a few of the mechanics that they use less regularly and explore the field a bit more.
Even though the runs are typically quite random, you would be able to make a custom type of your own in which to separately turn on or off the various factors that occur in No Return’s gameplay. Also when you do feel a bit more competitive, a Daily Run would be awaiting you to demonstrate your skill factor against the international global leaderboard. Each participant would have just one attempt at the same randomly generated run with a pre-determined character to do it with.
